Over the course of three weeks in September 2013, a
train traveled from New York City to San Francisco, making nine stops at train
stations across the country. So to hear, nothing spectacular, but what if this
train contained work of leading figures and underground creators from the
worlds of art, music, food, literature, and film for a series of cultural interventions
and site-specific happenings?
The train, designed as a moving, kinetic light
sculpture, broadcasted unique content and experiences to a global audience. The
name of this project? Station to station. The initiator? Artist
Doug Aitken and made possible by Levi's.

From September 6 to 28, artists and musicians
traveled across the US on the nine-car train, performing and sharing footage of
their journey online. At 10 locations - New York, Pittsburgh, Chicago,
Minneapolis & St Paul, Kansas City, Santa Fe, Winslow, Barstow, LA and
Oakland - the train stopped for a night of music, dance, short films and art
installations open to the public for $25 a ticket.

The launch event at New York and the closing event in Oakland ended with a multi-coloured smoke installation by Swiss artist Olaf Breuning.
Station to station was an ambitious project and was supported by an impressive digital campaign: the Station to Station site
combines official footage with tweets and comments submitted by the public and
was updated throughout the three-week journey, while Make our Mark encourages
creative expression via social media in response to questions such as ‘Who are
you?’, ‘What moves you?’ and ‘What’s your dream?’

The Station to Station Cultural
Fund enables artists of all disciplines to produce significant new work

definitions of art and culture to a global audience.
